City Nature Challenge 2020 at SWNP

April 25, 2020 @ 4:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Southwest Nature Preserve
5201 Bowman Springs Rd
Kennedale, TX 76060

In support of the City Nature Challenge 2020, the Friends of Southwest Nature Preserve will host two walks on Saturday, April 25.  Those participating will be part of the naturalists, citizen scientists, and outdoors enthusiasts in the Fort Worth-Dallas area, observing wildlife and posting our photos on iNaturalist. Thousands of people from across the globe will get outside to look for nature in their cities!

Take a walk and look for harmless reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates and discuss how these animals live in the Eastern Cross Timbers woodlands at Southwest Nature Preserve and elsewhere. One walk will be in late afternoon and another at sunset, and we will listen for frog calls and watch for these fascinating animals. The preserve is home to a number of frog species, several turtles, a few harmless snake species, and a few kinds of lizards. The number of spiders, dragonflies, and other invertebrates is very high, and we will be looking to “capture” all of them with our cameras, to add to our knowledge of the wildlife of the preserve.

Michael Smith will be our chief naturalist. Michael Smith is a naturalist and writer living in North Texas. He has a lifelong interest in herpetology, and co-authored “Herping Texas: The Quest for Reptiles and Amphibians” (with Clint King, Texas A&M University Press, 2018). A second book is expected in spring of 2020. Michael also posts his explorations of nature at www.livesinnature.comMichael’s “other” career is as a Psychological Associate, and he is interested in how time spent in nature affects us in terms of decreased stress and improved health.

All ages can contribute by posting photos of plants, animals, insects or any other evidence of life. Just bring your cameras and smartphones – and a keen eye – to document nature. We will provide water.

Starting from the parking lot, we’ll try to see how much nature we can find at the Preserve:
– 4:00 – Afternoon Trail Walk
– 7:30 – Sunset to Dark –  Trail walk

In preparation for getting the most out of these walks, get your smartphone ready:

  • Download the iNat app from the AppStore or Google Play
  • Sign In
  • Start taking photos and sharing your observations
