Beneath the Water & In the Woods –
See what’s in the pond and look for critters in the Preserve with three experienced naturalists
Watch as Nic Martinez and friends explore what’s below the ponds using nets and seines (this is an approved SW Nature Preserve activity – please don’t do this on your own). A variety of turtles, frogs, fish, and invertebrates live in the ponds, and we’ll find some of them and document them in the citizen science app “iNaturalist,” as part of the City Nature Challenge 2018.
Take a walk with Michael Smith, Clint King, and Nic as we walk the preserve and learn about this Eastern Cross Timbers ecosystem and the critters that live there. Michael’s and Clint’s specialties include reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates, but we want to see everything.
See and hear the preserve as night falls. We will pay particular attention to the edges of the ponds where frogs may be calling and we might see a harmless snake or two swimming under a nearly full moon. Owls may be calling and spiders will be spinning their beautiful webs.
Come with your cameras and curiosity! This place is a treasure trove of beautiful and fascinating life and we want to document as much of it as possible in this year’s citizen-science competition among cities in Texas and beyond. Remember, we take only photos and memories; we do not take anything else home. Children, with a supervising adult, are welcome but please keep in mind that the walks will be an hour or more over uneven terrain. Hope to see you on the 28th.
