During 2018, the Friends of SWNP are offering about half of our programs at the Preserve, with the intent of showing off different aspects of this unique area.  As our first of these on-site programs, we will be looking for birds, hoping to catch some of the spring migration as well as some of the year-round residents.

Walt Berk started birding in about 1985 and has been at it ever since; he has been birding in Texas for the last 23 years.  His first formal birding education was the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology Home Study Course in Bird Biology – a two-year program, completed in 2003.   He also graduated in the first Master Birder class, sponsored by the Dallas Audubon Society chapter, in 2013.   The one-year class focuses on North Central Texas Bird identification and habitats. Internationally, he’s birded in Costa Rica and Mexico, and in Europe.  Walt spent 3 years teaching a basic birding class in the Tarrant County College Senior Adult program; has been leading Bird Walks at the SWNP since 2014.
